Yousuf Karsh
Yousuf Karsh was born on December 23, 1908 in Mardin, Turkish Armenia. Yousuf is best know for being the photographer of the famous grumpy Churchill portrait. He is one of the most famous portrait photographers of the 20th century. Karsh and his family fled Armenia when he was 15 years old. He ended up in the Canadian capital of Ottawa, where he learned photography. Yousuf often would catch his subjects in surprising intimate or pensive moments. Many of his portraits were printed in Life magazine, making Karsh even more known to the world. Karsh died from complications of surgery on July 13, 2002.
